They tell the story of a group of marine grunts undergoing basic training on Paris Island, and the experience comes down to a confrontation between the gunnery sergeant ( Lee Ermey) and a tubby misfit ( Vince D'Onofrio) who is nicknamed Gomer Pyle.
The opening passages of "Full Metal Jacket" promise much more than the film finally is able to deliver. We've been here before, in other war movies, and we keep waiting for Kubrick to spring a surprise, but he never does.
You can only watch so much footage of a man crouched behind a barrier, pinned down by sniper fire, before the situation turns into a cinematic cliche. It does not, especially toward the end of the film. As far as the in country segment it looks pretty much like the real photos I saw in USMC training films.That would not be a problem if his material made the sets irrelevant. For anyone viewing this film trust me it doesn't get any closer to being Parris Island and I would say that the "Gunny" saw to that. The inside of the barracks and the head are identical to the real thing.
For a person who was there it had me fooled, although the O-Course and the rifle range are completely different in layout and looks. The Cadence is true to life as well as Senior Drill Instructor Hartmans dialect, all of the comments I can say 100% that I have heard on The Island and had them used on me. The part where they are running on the road with Joker carrying Pyle looks like the road to Elliots Beach. The base that they used in England looks very much like Parris Island, right down to the Grinder and the barracks in the background. I was a Marine at Parris Island in 1977 and I can certainly tell this film is very accurate in every respect right down to the blanket party scene. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn. You are nothing but unorganized grab-asstic pieces of amphibian shit! Because I am hard, you will not like me. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You will be a minister of death praying for war. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Bullshit, I can't hear you. From now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your filthy sewers will be "Sir". Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: I am Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, your senior drill instructor.
